Electric cars have been around for several years, but they’re still new to a lot of Raleigh drivers. So, a lot of them have questions, like, do electric cars need oil? Fully electric cars, like the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, do not use oil. So there’s no need for an “electric car oil change”. But, what if the vehicle isn’t fully electric, but is a hybrid, instead? The staff in our service center wants to help keep you informed, so let’s talk about these questions in more detail below.
As we said, electric cars do not use oil, so there’s no such thing as an electric car oil change. But that’s not the only maintenance task you can skip. Other things that will not need to be performed include changing spark plugs and replacing belts. An EV doesn’t use these things. Changing the brake and transmission fluid, as well as coolant if the car is equipped with a radiator will still need to be done in order to keep your car running on our Cary roads. You will also need to rotate and replace the tires, just as you would on a gas-powered car.
If you drive a hybrid electric car, oil change appointments still need to be scheduled along with all of the other services you would normally need to have done on a gas car. Why? Because a hybrid vehicle contains both an electric motor and a gas engine, which will need to be maintained just like any other gas engine. The only difference is that those visits aren’t as frequent, since the gas engine will not be used as much as it would in a non-hybrid car.
If driving a car that doesn’t need gas and never requires an oil change sounds good to you, come check out the Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV. They are incredibly efficient electric vehicles worthy of a test drive. And, if you’d like to learn more, check out our posts on how to check oil and what happens if you don’t get your oil changed.
